
Director Jang Tae-yoo of 'The Tyrant's Chef' Expresses Gratitude, Says Comparisons to 'Dae Jang Geum' are Welcome
Following the immense popularity and successful conclusion of tvN's historical drama 'The Tyrant's Chef,' director Jang Tae-yoo has shared his thoughts and gratitude towards the cast, crew, and viewers.
Director Jang expressed his joy and a sense of accomplishment, stating, "I am happy and proud that 'The Tyrant's Chef,' as Korea's first full-fledged culinary historical drama, received so much love until the end." He added, "I am also pleased to be compared to 'Dae Jang Geum.'"
He attributed the drama's success to its relatable storytelling, describing it as a "mild yet familiar taste" for viewers, coupled with meticulously filmed, mouth-watering food scenes and a fresh take on court intrigues. He particularly noted his satisfaction in seeing international viewers easily connect with K-food and recreate dishes from the drama on social media.
Regarding the unique CG effects and cheerful background music used to visually convey the taste of food, he explained, "I wanted to effectively convey the shock experienced by characters from 500 years ago tasting modern fine dining for the first time." He also expressed deep appreciation for actors Im Yoon-a and Lee Chae-min, who brilliantly handled the demanding blend of cooking, historical settings, comedy, and romance throughout the cold winter and hot summer.
