The Korean cinema scene is buzzing with activity during the Chuseok holiday, and the comedy film 'Boss' has taken the top spot at the box office.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated network, 'Boss,' released on September 3rd, has attracted 980,000 viewers as of the 6th, leading the box office in the early part of the holiday.
The comedy film, starring Jo Woo-jin, Jung Kyung-ho, and Lee Kyu-hyung, targets family audiences during the holiday season with its lighthearted 98-minute runtime. On September 6th alone, it drew 310,000 viewers, solidifying its position as the top Chuseok film.
Park Chan-wook's 'Decision to Leave,' previously in first place, has moved to second but continues to show strong popularity with a cumulative audience of 1.72 million viewers and is expected to surpass 2 million during the holiday.
The success of Japanese anime is also notable. 'Chainsaw Man the Movie: The Reze Arc' surpassed 1 million viewers on the morning of September 5th, ranking third. Its dazzling action and accessible story have been well-received by audiences.
'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - To the Hashira Training,' in fourth place, continues its long run with 5.15 million cumulative viewers, aiming to break the record for the highest-grossing Japanese anime in Korea, currently held by 'Suzume' (5.58 million viewers).
Meanwhile, Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Licorice Pizza' ranked fifth with 100,000 viewers, setting a new box office record for the director's films released in Korea.
This Chuseok, the box office is seeing fierce competition between new comedy releases, existing hits, and Japanese anime capitalizing on strong fan bases, drawing in audiences.
