Lee Kyu-hyung Doubles Down on Stage Passion After 'Boss' Success: 'The Stage is Addictive'
Actor Lee Kyu-hyung, who has been receiving rave reviews for his role in the film 'Boss,' has emphasized his passion for the stage.
In an interview held on the 20th in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, Lee Kyu-hyung discussed the recently released film 'Boss.' The movie, a comedic action film about members of an organization vying for the next boss position, has been a box office success, topping the charts during the Chuseok holiday and surpassing its break-even point with over 2.25 million viewers.
Lee Kyu-hyung, who returned to comedy after his well-received performance in last year's 'Handsome Guys,' effortlessly delivered slapstick humor in 'Boss,' eliciting laughter from the audience. Regarding his comedic prowess, he stated, "Comedy is a battle of rhythm," highlighting how his extensive experience in theater and musicals, where he directly interacts with live audiences, has been invaluable.
"What I've learned on stage isn't fundamentally different in film or drama, as it all involves interacting with people," Lee explained. He added that directors help fill in the gaps he might miss, expressing satisfaction with the filmmaking process. He believes that directors like Nam Dong-hyeop of 'Handsome Guys' and Ra Hee-chan of 'Boss,' each with their unique comedic philosophies, contributed to the audience's enjoyment.
Lee Kyu-hyung's next project is also a musical. He will be taking on a double role as a documentary PD and King Sejong in the musical 'Man in Hanbok,' opening in December. He expressed excitement about the creative process of a new musical, where the script and music are constantly evolving, allowing for significant actor input.
He also shared his delight that his debut musical, 'The Letter,' is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Lee remarked, "It's fascinating to see Korean original musicals gaining international recognition and K-content being so loved," adding, "It's something unimaginable 10 years ago, especially with 'The Letter' going to a showcase in the UK."
"The stage is my base. I always try to perform at least one production a year," he stated, highlighting the unique allure of the stage. "It offers a different kind of charm and catharsis compared to acting in front of a camera. There's no greater dopamine rush for me."
Furthermore, Lee Kyu-hyung stressed the irreplaceable appeal of live performances in the face of AI's growing influence. "On stage, we engage with a live audience, delivering a different performance every night. The audience changes, the co-actors' emotions differ, making each performance unique," he said, noting, "This is likely why international audiences are increasingly seeking out Korean musicals and plays."
He concluded by expressing his hope that Korean musicals will achieve global recognition, akin to Broadway in New York or the West End in London, becoming a celebrated part of world culture.
Netizens reacted enthusiastically to Lee Kyu-hyung's dedication to the stage, commenting, "Always a trustworthy actor," "Looking forward to seeing you shine in musicals too," and "Live performances irreplaceable by AI are the best!" Fans also expressed anticipation for his upcoming projects, with comments like, "Already counting down the days."
