Man, 39, Cries Over Burden of Caring for Intellectually Disabled Mother, Stifled Love Life
A 39-year-old man appeared on the KBS Joy show 'Ask Anything' (Mu-eot-do-deun Mul-eo-bo-sal), sharing the immense emotional and practical challenges of caring for his mother, who has an intellectual disability.
During the 337th episode aired on October 20th, the man revealed that his mother acquired her disability around middle school, but due to the limitations of medical technology at the time, a specific diagnosis was difficult. He currently lives with and cares for her, assisting with daily tasks like bathing.
He described his mother's condition as unpredictable, stating, "When she's quiet, she's incredibly quiet, to the point of not speaking up even when she has shingles all over her body. When she's talkative, she wants to go out frequently, and sometimes exhibits aggressive behavior." Having lost his father at 15 and his grandmother since, he confessed, "To my mother, I am everything," highlighting his sole responsibility.
When asked by host Lee Soo-geun about romantic relationships, he admitted, "I've often been unable to pursue relationships because considering the future, it's difficult to bring my mother along." He hasn't had a serious relationship in about 10 years.
Seo Jang-hoon offered empathetic advice: "Although it's a difficult situation, I don't think you should avoid dating attempts entirely because of your mother." He encouraged him to find someone who "truly likes you and has the heart to care for your mother as well." Lee Soo-geun added, "You must love yourself as much as you love your mother. You might feel empty later, wondering if this is how you were meant to live," offering a dose of reality.
Seo Jang-hoon further advised on financial planning, "There might come a time when caring for your mother at home becomes too difficult. If you want to place her in a good facility then, you need to earn more money now." He urged, "You don't have time to lament your situation. You need to build a life where you can live well, even after marriage." Lee Soo-geun concluded with encouragement, "Someone will surely appear. Show them who you are first."
Netizens expressed sympathy, with comments like, "His dedication to his mother is truly admirable," and "I hope he finds strength despite the difficulties." Many also found the practical advice regarding finances and future planning to be insightful.
