Doctor in Charge Arrested in Death of Patient at Yang Jae-woong's Clinic
A doctor, identified as A, who was in charge of a patient who died at a clinic operated by psychiatrist and broadcaster Yang Jae-woong, has been arrested.
According to Yonhap News on the 20th, the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency's Criminal Mobile Division announced that they had arrested Mr. A on charges of professional negligence resulting in death. Yang Woo-chang, chief judge at the Bucheon branch of the Incheon District Court, issued the arrest warrant, citing concerns about evidence tampering.
Mr. A is accused of failing to implement proper safety measures for a female patient in her 30s, identified as B, who was hospitalized at the clinic, leading to her death on May 27th last year. Ms. B died 17 days after being admitted for treatment of diet pill addiction. The fact that she was found to have been restrained at the time added to the social shock of the incident.
Previously, police had requested arrest warrants for three medical staff members, including Mr. A, but the prosecution returned the request. Subsequently, the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office's warrant review committee recommended that Mr. A's arrest be justified, leading to a renewed warrant request and issuance.
To date, a total of 11 individuals, including clinic director Yang Jae-woong, have been booked in connection with the case. Police are intensely investigating the overall management responsibilities of the clinic and the negligence of the medical staff.
Meanwhile, Yang Jae-woong recently appeared at a parliamentary audit to answer questions related to the incident. Controversies surrounding the clarification of the truth and accountability are expected to continue.
Furthermore, singer and actress Kang Ji-hyun (EXID's Hani), Yang Jae-woong's public girlfriend, has reportedly postponed her wedding indefinitely following the patient's death at his clinic. The couple had confirmed their relationship in October 2022 and planned to marry last year, but all plans were halted after the unfortunate accident.
Netizens have reacted with comments such as, 'It's a relief the doctor in charge has finally been arrested,' 'The overall management of the clinic seems to bear significant responsibility,' and 'I hope for a thorough investigation into the truth.' The public is urging for severe punishment and measures to prevent recurrence.
