Hong Kyung Dreams of 'Movie Star' Status, Eyes Collaboration with Jeon Do-yeon
Following the release of the Netflix film 'Killers of the Flower Moon', actor Hong Kyung expressed his aspirations to become a 'movie star' and his deep admiration for veteran actress Jeon Do-yeon.
In a recent interview in Seoul, Hong Kyung spoke about his role as elite Air Force controller Seo Go-myung in 'Killers of the Flower Moon', a film set in the 1970s about a suspicious operation to land a hijacked plane.
He described his character, Seo Go-myung, as someone he felt deeply connected to. "This character is so precious to me. I feel like I spent my twenties chasing unseen things. Things that can't be explained in words, but I chased them, and that's what resonated with Go-myung," he shared, likening the experience to a fateful encounter.
Hong Kyung also reflected on his journey as an actor. "It's less about certainty and more about gaining hope and moving to the next stage. Perhaps it's about courage, the thought that I can now explore something different," he emphasized, highlighting his continuous growth.
Looking back on his past desire to become a 'movie star', Hong Kyung evaluated his current work. "Through projects like 'Bots 2580', 'Blue Summer', and 'Weak Hero Class 1', I've re-evaluated what I've felt. I think I've been running with my own standards. So far, it feels encouraging," he said.
He specifically mentioned actors he looks up to, including Sol Kyung-gu, Ryu Seung-beom, Al Pacino, Denzel Washington, and Leonardo DiCaprio. "I really want to work on a project with Jeon Do-yeon sunbaenim," he stated. Jeon Do-yeon made a special appearance in 'Killers of the Flower Moon' as the First Lady, leaving a strong impression.
"Her scene was my favorite moment. It felt like sophisticated comedy. It's like she's performing magic. Even watching beside her, I couldn't figure it out. It was an amazing experience as an actor," he marveled at Jeon Do-yeon's performance.
Regarding the 'movie star' persona he aims for, Hong Kyung believes it's about being someone people want to see in theaters. "You need charisma and energy. I don't know if it comes with effort, but I think it follows when you do good work," he explained. He also revealed his desire for future roles: "Before my youth passes, I want to try a passionate melodrama, a story of love with big, turbulent emotions."
