YouTuber Jeong Sun-ho Criticizes 'W Korea' Breast Cancer Campaign as a 'Party Using Cancer'
YouTuber Jeong Sun-ho, who boasts 1.8 million subscribers, has strongly criticized the breast cancer awareness charity event hosted by 'W Korea'.
On the 19th, Jeong Sun-ho uploaded a video to his YouTube channel commemorating 'World Breast Cancer Day.' In the video, he placed a pink ribbon on his mother, who had previously battled breast cancer, and reflected on the difficult memories from that time. His mother recalled the pain of chemotherapy, having to wear a beanie due to hair loss, and the challenges of wearing a seatbelt.
Regarding the hardest times, his mother stated, "Everything was difficult." However, she expressed gratitude that her son's presence and time spent with her, without treating her like a patient, helped her overcome the illness without falling into depression. Jeong Sun-ho emphasized the importance of stress management in overcoming illness and stressed the necessity of regular health check-ups. His mother also shared her experience of being diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer without any prior warning signs, further highlighting the importance of early detection.
During this segment, Jeong Sun-ho surprised his mother by singing Jay Park's song 'Mommae' for the breast cancer awareness campaign. His mother strongly criticized the song choice, arguing that it was inappropriate for the campaign's purpose and could cause feelings of shame and discomfort to patients.
Jeong Sun-ho pointed out that while the 'W Korea' event claimed to promote breast cancer awareness, it was actually structured as a party, leveraging the magazine's fashion focus and overshadowing the essence of breast cancer. He criticized questions posed to celebrities like 'How many times did you look in the mirror today?' as insensitive, disregarding the physical pain experienced by patients. He expressed deep disappointment, stating, "They held such an event by 'selling' cancer."
Jeong Sun-ho's mother also expressed discomfort with the term 'breast cancer' itself, preferring it to be called 'lymphoma' and feeling that 'breast cancer' specifically references women.
Jeong Sun-ho vehemently criticized 'W Korea' for its complacency and irresponsibility in organizing the event. He argued that simply gathering popular celebrities and influencers does not improve awareness and that the organizers failed to conduct basic research and understanding of breast cancer. He also expressed regret that the participating celebrities, had they researched and understood the event's purpose, could have recognized the flawed atmosphere on-site.
He characterized the event as merely a party, criticizing it as a business move to attract celebrities and secure sponsorships using breast cancer as a pretext. Furthermore, he worried that such events could deeply hurt individuals suffering from breast cancer, urging that future contributors should thoroughly understand and study the core issues before organizing events.
Meanwhile, 'W Korea' issued a late apology, admitting to the inappropriate structure and execution of the event and expressing regret to breast cancer patients and their families. However, the event's content and after-party videos have already drawn significant criticism.
Netizens reacted to Jeong Sun-ho's criticism by saying, 'He's really saying what needs to be said,' 'W Korea crossed the line this time,' 'An event that only hurt breast cancer patients,' and 'It's good to see him doing his job properly as a YouTuber,' showing support for his principled stance.
