W Korea Breast Cancer Charity Event Sparks Outrage; Celebrities Speak Out
W Korea's charity event aimed at raising breast cancer awareness has come under fire for its inappropriate execution, drawing sharp criticism from celebrities and influencers.
Youtuber Jeong Seon-ho, with 1.83 million subscribers, posted a video expressing his displeasure, questioning the choice of playing Jay Park's song 'Mommae' during the campaign. "How can they play such a song at a campaign event?" he stated, criticizing the organizers for a lack of thought and accountability.
Kwon Mina, former member of girl group AOA, also shared her personal feelings on social media. Having lost her father to pancreatic cancer and with her sister battling breast cancer, she expressed her distress: "If they truly cared about cancer patients, such a drinking party wouldn't have been held." She found the juxtaposition of the glamorous event with the name 'breast cancer' deeply upsetting.
While W Korea stated the 'Love Your W' event aimed to highlight the importance of early breast cancer detection, the event was marred by revealing outfits, champagne parties, and questionable song choices. Netizens also pointed fingers at the amount of donations raised compared to the event's lavishness.
Facing mounting criticism, W Korea issued an apology, acknowledging that the "composition and conduct were inappropriate in light of the campaign's purpose." With public statements from various celebrities and influencers, the controversy surrounding the event shows no signs of quieting down soon.
Netizens have commented that the event's concept was "too much" and "could be hurtful to breast cancer patients," criticizing the organizers' superficial approach. Some also questioned the allocation of funds, asking, "Did they spend too much on the event compared to the donation amount?"
