KOMCA to Host CISAC Legal Committee Meeting in Seoul This October
The Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) announced that it will host the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) Legal Committee meeting for two days from October 21st to 22nd in Itaewon, Seoul.
This marks the first time the CISAC Legal Committee will convene in Korea, signifying Seoul's growing importance as a hub for global copyright policy discussions. KOMCA, currently a board member of CISAC, is actively participating in these international policy dialogues.
The CISAC Legal Committee is a key body within CISAC, an international federation of copyright management organizations worldwide. It oversees litigation, legal and policy reviews, and inter-organizational cooperation related to copyright.
With the rapid proliferation of generative AI globally, the protection of creators' rights has become a paramount issue in the international copyright sphere. The first day of the meeting will focus on 'Copyright Systems and Legal/Policy Directions in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,' addressing critical issues such as the application of reproduction and communication rights in AI training data and Text Data Mining (TDM) exceptions.
The second day will delve into the international standardization of copyright systems and policy responses across various sectors. The meeting will also explore the potential establishment of a single entity to streamline music licensing procedures in the Asia-Pacific region.
KOMCA has also organized a cultural exchange program for the international delegates, including a traditional Korean music performance during the welcome dinner and a cultural tour of Gyeongbok Palace and Namsangol Hanok Village.
“This Seoul meeting will serve as an opportunity to concretize international standards and cooperation models for copyright protection in the age of artificial intelligence,” stated KOMCA President Choo Ga-yeol. Koo Sung-joon, Head of KOMCA's Legal Affairs Team, added, “We will do our best to ensure Korea can propose practical system improvements and cooperation measures at the center of international copyright discussions.”
Netizens expressed enthusiasm for the event, commenting, 'Copyright issues in the AI era are truly critical,' 'It's amazing that such a major meeting is being held in Korea,' and 'I hope the international delegates enjoy Korean culture.'
