Choo Yoo-cheol, Chairman of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), directly addressed recent misconduct allegations involving high-ranking executives at an international meeting, vowing to prevent recurrence.
According to KOMCA, Chairman Choo attended the Asia-Pacific Committee (APC) meeting of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) held in Beijing, China, from October 29-30. During the forum, he transparently explained the circumstances of the misconduct and the subsequent measures taken, while pledging to enhance organizational transparency and ethics.
Prior to the meeting, CISAC had emphasized the importance of sharing a thorough explanation and clarification regarding the allegations against KOMCA's senior management with its sister organizations and officially recommended Chairman Choo's attendance.
Chairman Choo stated at the meeting that the incident was due to the "personal misconduct of some employees" and asserted that it did not impact the association's overall operations. He also highlighted the swift response, including convening an emergency board meeting, suspending relevant personnel, and forming a special investigation committee, and pledged full cooperation with future external investigations.
He declared, "Taking this incident as an opportunity, we will make 'transparency,' 'accountability,' and 'ethics' our core values for organizational management, and strive to become an association that members and creators can trust."
In a significant achievement, Park Soo-ho, head of KOMCA's Business Department 2, was elected Vice Chairman of the CISAC APC, a development seen as elevating the international standing of the Korean music copyright industry.
Mr. Park will participate in key policy decisions of the APC for the next three years, leading cooperation and exchange among copyright organizations in the Asia-Pacific region.
Through this meeting, KOMCA reaffirmed its commitment to regaining trust with the international community and strengthening the protection of rights for members and creators through transparent organizational operations.
Korean netizens reacted positively, with comments such as, "It's a relief he properly explained himself on the international stage," "Congratulations on Park Soo-ho's election as Vice Chairman! May Korea's copyright standing rise," and "KOMCA, use this opportunity for a thorough reform and ensure such incidents never happen again."
