LG Twins Clinch Back-to-Back Championship; Cheerleader Lee Ju-eun Crowned 'Championship Cheerleader' for Second Consecutive Year
The LG Twins have achieved a remarkable back-to-back integrated championship this season, and cheerleader Lee Ju-eun, who gained international fame with her 'Ppeekki Ppeekki Dance' last year, has been named the 'Championship Cheerleader' for the second year in a row.
Last year, while cheering for the KIA Tigers, Lee Ju-eun captivated audiences with her signature 'Ppeekki Ppeekki Dance.' KIA Tigers went on to win both the league and the integrated championship that same year.
The 'Ppeekki Ppeekki Dance' is a short, energetic performance executed by cheerleaders when a pitcher strikes out an opposing batter. It involves raising thumbs and swaying the body to a drum beat and DJ's scratch performance.
Notably, a video of Lee Ju-eun casually performing the dance while touching up her makeup went viral, surpassing 95 million views on YouTube and attracting global attention. Last August, The New York Times (NYT) highlighted the 'Ppeekki Ppeekki Dance' in an article titled 'Who Are These Korean Cheerleaders Taking Over TikTok?', reporting that videos of baseball cheerleaders performing 'ultra-chill' dance moves were dominating social media algorithms and gaining millions of fans.
Despite this international spotlight, Lee Ju-eun moved to the CPBL's Wei Chuan Dragons in January of this year and joined the LG Twins cheerleading squad in April. This arrangement was made on the condition that her domestic activities would not interfere with her commitments in Taiwan.
On October 31st, the LG Twins defeated the Hanwha Eagles 4-1 in Game 5 of the Korean Series at Hanwha Life Eagles Park. This victory secured their integrated championship title for the second time since 2023, marking their fourth integrated championship overall, following their wins in 1990, 1994, and 2023.
The Hanwha Eagles, aiming to reclaim the Korean Series title for the first time in 26 years since their 1999 championship, finished as runners-up this season.
Netizens reacted enthusiastically, commenting things like, "Congratulations to Lee Ju-eun on winning the championship for the second year in a row! I want to see the Ppeekki Ppeekki dance again!" and "The LG Twins' victory is amazing, and Lee Ju-eun's energy really added to the excitement." Others remarked, "World-class dance moves! Looking forward to next season!"
