Actor Gong Myung Sparks Debate With 'Let's Go LG!' Post Cheering Brother Doyoung's Team
Actor Gong Myung has found himself at the center of an unexpected debate following his social media post cheering for the Korean Series.
On October 31st, Gong Myung shared several photos on his social media account, featuring his younger brother, NCT's Doyoung, dressed in a suit. Gong Myung captioned the captured screen image, "I sent my brother some energy! Let's go LG!" adding, "So cool, my brother," with a heart emoji.
That day, October 31st, marked Game 5 of the 2025 KBO Postseason Korean Series, held at Daejeon Hanwha Life Insurance Park. NCT's Doyoung was tasked with singing the national anthem. The game concluded with the LG Twins defeating the Hanwha Eagles 4-1, securing the Korean Series championship after a two-year hiatus.
Known as an LG fan, Gong Myung posted again after the win, expressing his joy with "Congratulations on the championship!!!" and writing, "Victory Fairy Kim Dong-young (Doyoung's real name)."
However, over the two days following the game, criticism emerged regarding Gong Myung's actions. Some criticized him for supporting a different team despite his brother singing the national anthem, while others questioned why he felt the need to show support for another team at the Hanwha home stadium, not the LG home stadium.
In response, other baseball fans defended him, stating, "It's just Doyoung's brother supporting his team, not Doyoung himself, so there's no reason to criticize him," "Gong Myung's support doesn't affect who wins or loses, does it?" and "It wasn't necessary to call him a 'Victory Fairy' during such an intense Korean Series."
This led to further discussion, with some arguing, "'Victory Fairy' is a common expression among baseball fans," "Why use it specifically there then?" and "Anyone who comes and they win, they call them a 'Victory Fairy', right? This is what happens. If you're new to baseball, get out," and "The fact that this is becoming a controversy is more problematic."
Initially, the act of singing the national anthem is a neutral role appointed by the KBO, implying an unwritten rule of neutrality. NCT's Doyoung himself was cautious. However, Gong Myung drew attention simply by being Doyoung's brother. Given the immense popularity both siblings enjoy, and the high attendance of baseball, reaching ten million spectators, such controversies are likely to persist even after the Korean Series concludes.
This debate seems to stem from an over-interpretation of a simple act of 'support'. Gong Myung is known to be an LG fan, and Doyoung simply did his best in his role. Meanwhile, voices are rising for a more mature cheering culture, fostering an atmosphere of mutual understanding among fans.
Netizens reacted to Gong Myung's SNS post with comments like, "It's heartwarming to see brotherly affection," "Doyoung can sing the anthem while his brother cheers for LG," and "Isn't 'Victory Fairy' a common term among fans?", largely defending Gong Myung.
