Rapper Jung Sang-soo Apologizes for Controversial Political Remarks at High School Festival
Rapper Jung Sang-soo has issued a direct apology after sparking controversy with political remarks supporting former President Yoon Suk-yeol during a high school festival performance.
In a statement released on his social media on November 1st, Jung said, "I made inappropriate political remarks in a public setting on October 31st." He continued, "Despite it being a place where students were meant to enjoy themselves, my lapse in judgment caused significant disappointment, for which I apologize."
Earlier, on October 31st, Jung performed at the festival of Chungam High School, the alma mater of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. He brought a student on stage and asked, "What is Chungam High School's pride?" Upon the student's reply, "Yoon Suk-yeol," Jung exclaimed, "I was holding onto that too. Yoon Again!" and led a chant.
The incident quickly spread via social media, igniting controversy. While some students cheered, the Chungam High School student council issued an immediate statement clarifying, "The remarks were not requested, discussed, or coordinated with the school or student council," emphasizing, "These were Jung Sang-soo's personal statements."
In his apology video, Jung explained, "I don't typically take a political stance, left or right. While interviewing the student on stage, I got carried away trying to liven up the atmosphere and said something I shouldn't have."
He further stated, "My remarks were personal and not discussed with the school," bowing his head and pleading, "Please do not direct criticism towards the school and its students."
Jung added, "As the situation escalated, I realized my mistake cannot be covered by excuses. Please direct all criticism towards me. I will be more careful to avoid inappropriate remarks in any setting going forward."
Jung Sang-soo debuted in 2009 and gained recognition through the 'Show Me The Money' series. He has previously faced controversy for drunk driving and assault.
Netizens have reacted with criticism, with comments like, "I don't understand why Jung Sang-soo made those remarks," and "He should have avoided political talk in front of students." Many also expressed sympathy for the school, stating, "He just put the school in a difficult position."
