Former Police Officer Charged in Leak of Actor Lee Sun-kyun's Investigation Details Receives 3-Year Sentence Request
A former police officer, identified as Mr. A, has been formally requested to serve a three-year prison sentence for allegedly leaking investigation information related to the late actor Lee Sun-kyun.
The sentencing request was made during a closing trial at the Incheon District Court on the 3rd.
Appearing in court, Mr. A expressed his sincere apologies, stating, "I deeply regret that this incident occurred due to my failure to clearly distinguish between public duty and private matters." His legal defense team pleaded for leniency, highlighting that Mr. A was not the initial source of the leak, did not profit personally from it, and has already been dismissed from his position.
Mr. A is accused of photographing and distributing a police report containing details of the investigation into Lee Sun-kyun's alleged drug use to two journalists in October 2023. The leaked report reportedly included personal information about the late actor, such as his background and criminal record.
Lee Sun-kyun underwent three police interrogations following the media reports and was tragically found deceased on December 27, 2023.
Korean netizens expressed outrage over the breach of internal security, with comments like, 'The police must strengthen their internal discipline,' and 'I hope the late actor's injustice can be somewhat resolved.' Many called for a thorough investigation into the matter and measures to prevent recurrence.
