Ballad Emperor Kim Jong-chan Returns After 32 Years with New Song, Shares Story of Business Failure, Imprisonment, and Ministry
Kim Jong-chan, once hailed as the 'Ballad Emperor' of the 1980s, has made a comeback with a new song after a 32-year hiatus.
Appearing on the KBS 1TV program 'Achim Madang' on the 4th, Kim Jong-chan introduced his latest release, 'I Am a Debtor to You,' sharing his current situation and candidly recounting the dramatic twists and turns of his life.
He explained his reasons for stepping away from the entertainment industry to dedicate himself to ministry, admitting that distancing himself from the allure of show business was not easy. Nevertheless, he stated, "Singing is the greatest tool for saving people," explaining his decision to return to the stage.
During his peak popularity as a singer, Kim Jong-chan embarked on ambitious business ventures, earning vast sums of money that filled his safes with cash. However, a series of failed investments led to significant losses, he recalled. The repercussions eventually extended to his family and friends, resulting in a period of lost freedom.
A turning point arrived during his time in prison. While listening to a correctional officer read from the Bible, he wept uncontrollably. This experience led him to fully embrace his faith, after which he began pastoring a small church, emphasizing his commitment to fostering a warm and virtuous community, even with a modest congregation.
With this new song, Kim Jong-chan aims to bridge his life as a minister and his calling as a singer. "Though it may not be as glamorous as before, I want to convey emotions through my songs," he vowed.
