Sung Yu-ri Returns to TV After 2 Years Amid Husband's Coin Fraud Scandal
Former Fin.K.L singer and actress Sung Yu-ri has returned to television after a two-year hiatus, taking on MC duties for the new tvN variety show 'To the End'.
Her comeback marks her first appearance since the KBS2 show 'Love Recall' concluded in 2023. The extended break was largely due to the controversy surrounding her husband, former professional golfer and coach Ahn Sung-hyun, who was implicated in a coin fraud case.
Ahn was accused of receiving approximately 3 billion KRW in cash and luxury items worth 400 million KRW from the suspected beneficial owner of Bithumb between September and November 2021, in exchange for facilitating cryptocurrency listings.
While Sung Yu-ri maintained silence on the specifics of the case, she continued to share glimpses of her family life with her twin daughters on social media. Last January, she posted on Instagram, "I earnestly pray that the truth about the unfair and difficult matters our family is going through will be revealed."
Ahn Sung-hyun was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for fraud and 배임수재 (bribery) in December of last year, but was later released on bail in June of this year. Following his release, Sung Yu-ri resumed her career, including her work as a home shopping host and now as a TV show MC.
Industry insiders suggest that Sung Yu-ri's return is not viewed negatively, as the controversy did not directly involve her. However, some express caution regarding the show's format and communication with the public, given that victims were involved in the case.
Netizens welcomed Sung Yu-ri's return, commenting things like, "Glad to see you back after going through a tough time," and "Sung Yu-ri herself is not at fault, so I'll be cheering her on separately from her husband's issues." Many expressed anticipation for the new program.
