Priest Kim Woong-yeol on 'You Quiz on the Block': Real Exorcism '10 Times Scarier' Than Movies
Priest Kim Woong-yeol, who appeared on tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block,' discussed the reality of exorcism, stating it's 'over 10 times scarier' than depicted in films like 'The Priests.'
During the broadcast on the 5th, Father Kim Woong-yeol, known as the 'priest who chases darkness,' shared his experiences as an advisor for exorcism scenes in movies.
He explained that his role is to prevent misunderstandings by ensuring movie portrayals align with actual practices. When asked about the types of cases he handles, Father Kim revealed that individuals possessed by evil spirits, or 'bumaja,' rarely come willingly. "They are often dragged or carried here, or they come after psychiatric treatment fails to provide a solution," he stated, emphasizing that he never immediately concludes someone is possessed.
He elaborated on the cautious process, noting that families often arrive with a firm belief that their loved one is possessed. "We conduct various tests to confirm, and only then do we seek permission from the bishop to proceed," he said. "We also involve priests who are not easily frightened to assist."
Hosts Yoo Jae-seok and Jo Se-ho inquired about the intensity of these rituals, asking if they are as dramatic as seen in movies. Father Kim candidly replied, "People often ask if it's as scary as in the representative exorcism movies. In reality, it's over 10 times scarier than what you see."
Father Kim also detailed the tools used in exorcisms, mentioning the 'Rituale Romanum' (Exorcism Prayer Book) in Latin, which is lengthy and not for lay use. "Holy water is the greatest source of strength," he explained, followed by the cross and an exorcism ring. "When the cross on the ring is touched to the possessed person, they struggle significantly." He added that reciting the Rosary and praying while touching the body or forehead also aids the process.
Netizens expressed a mix of awe and apprehension. Comments included, "Hearing about real exorcisms is fascinating," "I can't even imagine something 10 times scarier than the movies," and "Father Kim is truly remarkable."
