G-Dragon Opens Up About Emotional Turmoil During False Drug Allegations
Singer G-Dragon candidly shared the pain and frustration he experienced during the false drug use rumors that once embroiled him.
Appearing on MBC's 'Son Suk-hee's Questions' on the 5th, G-Dragon recalled being booked in November 2023 on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act. He was later cleared with an 'innocent' verdict, receiving a non-prosecution disposition after testing negative in both reagent and detailed analyses.
Despite the official clearance, he expressed his pent-up frustration at being unable to speak out at the time. "Even as the party involved, I had no platform to voice my personal opinions and feelings because I was taking a break from activities," he shared, describing the confusing situation where he couldn't appeal his innocence or hold a press conference to state his position.
He confessed, "I felt empty and futile. It was painful, and the fact that I had to endure it was frustrating. I wondered if it was right to make a comeback. If I retired, I could just be a regular person, but there was no reason for that. I thought I should be relieved it's over, but for months, I agonized over whether it truly was over or if I had merely been forced out."
Despite confidently stating his non-involvement in drug crimes to the press upon his voluntary appearance, public perception and rumors pushed him to the brink.
When host Son Suk-hee remarked on his new song 'POWER' music video, noting, "You said it was a humorous satire, but it was a direct critique," G-Dragon explained, "I had a message to convey." He revealed that the song was born out of his experience with the false accusation.
"What I could do was music, and it coincided with the period I was slowly preparing for an album. As I wrote down my experiences, the song felt like it had 'found its owner,'" he explained, emphasizing that 'POWER' is more than just a song; it's a work imbued with his personal feelings. The music video for 'POWER' visually references 'The Truman Show,' powerfully satirizing the 'POWER' of the media surrounding him and the reality of being cornered by speculation.
Korean netizens expressed sympathy and support, commenting things like 'I can't imagine how difficult it must have been for G-Dragon,' 'His courage to sublimate it into music is amazing,' and 'We hope he makes a comeback with good music soon.'
