Appearing on the tvN variety show 'You Quiz on the Block' for its 'Endless Struggle' special, mixed martial artist Choi Hong-man officially announced his return to the sport, dispelling rumors of retirement.

During the broadcast on the 5th, Choi Hong-man addressed his hiatus and his intentions for a comeback. After a successful transition from Ssireum (Korean wrestling) to K-1, he gained immense popularity following his victory against Bob Sapp, reportedly earning 2 billion KRW annually at the peak of his career. However, he abruptly disappeared from the public eye in 2008.

Explaining the reasons for his disappearance, Choi Hong-man detailed his brain tumor surgery and the contractual obligations that forced him to compete despite his condition. "I discovered a tumor during a health check-up and underwent surgery. But due to contracts, I had to fight again just three months later. I wasn't in good condition, and it was mentally taxing," he confessed. He also clarified his decision to forfeit the extension in his fight against Semmy Schilt, stating, "I gave up the extension out of apprehension, not because I was injured."

He revealed the emotional toll of the intense criticism he faced at the time. "There was so much backlash, asking why I didn't finish the fight or why I wasn't competing properly. They didn't know my situation. People would cheer when I won but fabricate stories and curse me when I lost. That hurt," he shared, recounting how the malicious comments led to a 20kg weight loss and social avoidance.

"Even when walking down the street, I felt like people were talking about me, making me anxious. It was especially severe in crowded places," he said, explaining that he lived alone for nine years to avoid people. The decision to return was prompted by the realization that "there were many people supporting me and waiting for me to compete."

He also shared the tragic news of his mother's critical condition immediately after his victory in his comeback match on the domestic stage after 10 years. He was shocked by her emaciated appearance due to cancer metastasis, but recalled her last words before she passed away: "Don't stress yourself out in life from now on."

Officially declaring that he has never retired, Choi Hong-man stated that he is currently training consistently and is in the best condition of his life. "I really want to have one last retirement match. I want to retire at my peak," he expressed. He humorously added, "While I was away, Seo Jang-hoon and Ha Seung-jin took over the 'giant' position. I'm the original. My goal is to reclaim my spot."

Netizens are reacting positively to Choi Hong-man's comeback announcement, with comments like 'I hope his final retirement match is a great one,' 'Thank you for appearing on the show now after enduring so much hardship,' and 'I hope he overcomes past controversies and shows a good performance.'
