Netflix's 'K-Pop: Demon Hunters' Greenlit for Sequel, Targeting 2029 Release
Netflix and Sony Pictures have officially inked a deal for a sequel to the hit animated film 'K-Pop: Demon Hunters,' with a projected release date in 2029, according to reports from Variety and Bloomberg.
The production timeline may see adjustments given the nature of feature-length animation, but the confirmation of a follow-up has sent waves of excitement through the fandom.
'K-Pop: Demon Hunters' captivated audiences worldwide upon its release in June, following the adventures of the K-pop superstar girl group Huntricx – comprised of Lumi, Mira, and Joy – as they battle supernatural forces using the power of music. The film achieved a record-breaking 300 million views on Netflix, becoming the platform's most-watched animated movie.
Adding to its success, the original soundtrack song 'Golden,' performed by Huntricx, topped both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Charts, a remarkable feat for an animated soundtrack.
Director Maggie Kang had previously hinted at the possibility of a sequel in a BBC interview, stating, "I believe there are many more stories to tell with these characters." Co-director Chris Appelhans also expressed enthusiasm, mentioning, "There's a whole world that we didn't get to explore fully in the first film. The next installment will expand into new stages and music."
In anticipation of the sequel, Netflix is launching an official 'K-Pop: Demon Hunters' pop-up tour starting December 4th through 28th in Seoul's Seongsu-dong. The tour will subsequently travel to major Asian cities including Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo, and Taipei, offering fans an immersive experience of Huntricx's world and performances.
Fans are buzzing with excitement online, with comments like "Can't wait for the sequel!", "Hoping the new OST is as amazing as 'Golden'!", and "Definitely want to go to the pop-up tour!" reflecting the global anticipation.
