LucidFall Reflects on Viral 'Mandarin Home Shopping' 10 Years Later: 'We Just Couldn't Get a Good Time Slot'
Singer-songwriter LucidFall has opened up about his memorable 'Mandarin Home Shopping' broadcast, which gained significant attention a decade ago.
During an interview on July 7th at the Antenna headquarters in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, held for the release of his 11th full-length album 'Another Place,' LucidFall shared insights into his new music and his other significant endeavor: tangerine farming.
'Another Place' marks LucidFall's return to full-length albums after approximately three years since 'Voice and Guitar,' released in November 2022. He has poured his heart into every aspect of the album, personally handling the songwriting, composition, arrangement, mixing, and even vinyl mastering.
When the conversation shifted to his tangerine farm, LucidFall confessed, "This year, I poured my soul into the album work, so I neglected the farm after May. I feel sorry for the trees that have endured well."
The 'Mandarin Home Shopping' event, held to commemorate the release of his 7th full-length album, was now a decade in the past. LucidFall recalled the special limited edition package that included his 7th album CD, a fairy tale book he wrote, and 1kg of tangerines from Jeju Island. The package sold out in just 9 minutes, showcasing its immense popularity.
LucidFall admitted he never anticipated such success. "Someone mentioned it just the other day. I did it at 2 AM, I wonder if anyone actually watched it?" he mused. "People often reinterpret the process based on the outcome. They say, 'The 2 AM slot was a concept.' But it wasn't; we just couldn't get a better programming slot."
He explained, "Home shopping channels move their time slots based on sales. Antenna contacted all the home shopping channels, but we were rejected everywhere. Somehow, through some connections at CJ, we managed to secure the 2 AM slot. It became such an issue that I heard the people involved got promoted because of it."
Concluding the anecdote, LucidFall added with a laugh, "It was created with the intention of doing something quirky among ourselves. I have no plans to do it again. I can't even wake up at 2 AM myself."
Korean netizens reacted enthusiastically to LucidFall's recollection of the 'Mandarin Home Shopping' from 10 years ago, commenting, "That was so fresh back then," "The 2 AM vibe was perfect," and "Amazing songs and mandarins, it was complete." Some even humorously asked, "Will there be home shopping for the next album?" showing their support for his unique endeavors.
