Jeon Somi Faces Legal Action Over Unauthorized Use of Red Cross Logo for Beauty Brand
Singer Jeon Somi is facing controversy after her beauty brand was accused of unauthorized use of the Red Cross logo.
On the 7th, the Seoul Seongdong Police Station announced that a complaint had been filed against Jeon Somi and the CEO of her beauty brand, VTooB Korea (referred to as A), for alleged violations of the Red Cross Organization Act.
Jeon Somi launched her cosmetics business last year, garnering significant attention. However, the 'Emotion Emergency Kit,' a special PR kit for her latest product, reportedly incorporated elements resembling the Red Cross emblem without prior approval.
The brand's official statement apologized, explaining that the kit was conceptualized around emotions and not related to actual medical or relief efforts. They admitted to a mistake in including visually similar elements to the Red Cross symbol without proper authorization, acknowledging a lack of understanding of the symbol's historical, humanitarian, and legal significance.
The brand has ceased the use of the controversial designs and communications materials. They are also in the process of recalling and reprinting the PR kits that have already been distributed. Furthermore, they have initiated discussions with the Korean Red Cross to fulfill all necessary measures and pledged to strengthen legal and ethical review processes in brand planning and design, alongside implementing regular compliance training for all employees.
Netizens have expressed concern, with comments like "The Red Cross logo should have been handled with more caution," "Jeon Somi, as the founder, bears significant responsibility," and "Despite the apology, the reputational damage is likely substantial."
