Lee You-mi Sheds Pounds for 'Death You' Role, Aims to Show Trauma Physically
Actress Lee You-mi has revealed the drastic weight loss she underwent for her role as Jo Hee-soo, a survivor of domestic violence, in the Netflix series 'Death You'.
Lee explained that she wanted to convey the character's pain not just through acting but also physically, leading her to lose weight from her usual low 40kg range down to approximately 36kg.
This extreme measure was taken to visually represent Hee-soo's suffering and the scars of abuse, making the portrayal more convincing through her frail physique.
However, Lee expressed deep consideration for actual victims. "It was a delicate portrayal as an actor, stepping into experiences I haven't personally had," she stated, adding that the weight loss was an extension of this concern, an effort to fully embody Hee-soo's life and terror.
She hopes the series offers comfort and courage to survivors and firmly conveyed her anger towards perpetrators, wishing they face consequences. Her ultimate message to victims is, "It is not your fault."
Netizens are praising Lee You-mi's dedication to her role. Comments included, "Her commitment to embodying the character is amazing," "She'll likely portray the heavy theme of domestic violence powerfully," and "Please take care of your health, that's most important!"
