Kris Wu's Prison Death Rumors Debunked by Chinese Authorities
Rumors circulating in Chinese media about the death of former EXO member Kris Wu (Wu Yifan) in prison have been officially denied by Chinese authorities.
Recent reports, citing anonymous sources claiming to be fellow inmates, alleged that Wu had been murdered due to disputes with gang members and even suggested organ harvesting. These claims spread rapidly across social media platforms, fueling public speculation.
However, the Jiangsu Provincial Public Security Department has now stepped in, issuing a statement via their official Weibo account declaring the rumors as "groundless slander." The authorities emphasized that the reports lack any factual basis.
Kris Wu debuted with the K-pop group EXO in 2012. He later left the group and SM Entertainment in 2014 to pursue a solo career in China. In 2021, he was arrested and subsequently convicted of rape, including statutory rape, and faced charges related to group obscenity. He was sentenced to 11 years and 6 months for rape and 1 year and 10 months for group obscenity, and was serving his sentence.
Chinese netizens have expressed relief following the official denial. Comments such as "So glad the authorities clarified the baseless rumors about Kris Wu's death, it was getting out of hand" and "Appreciate the official confirmation, I was worried sick about these unverified stories" were common.
