Jang Seung-jo Stuns as Dual Villains in 'The Betrayal'
Jang Seung-jo is leaving audiences in awe with his portrayal of two distinct villains in the Netflix series ‘The Betrayal’.
The series tells the story of women who decide to commit murder to escape their hellish realities, and Jang Seung-jo plays the pivotal figure who creates this 'hell' for them.
In this role, he takes on dual characters, both leaning towards absolute evil: the abusive husband Noh Jin-pyo and the cunning Jang Kang. While portraying dual roles is not uncommon, Jang Seung-jo’s characters deviate from the typical good-versus-evil dynamic.
As Noh Jin-pyo, he is a notorious rage-inducer, gaslighting and physically assaulting his wife Hee-soo. This character oscillates between sudden tenderness and monstrous violence, a chilling blend of Jang Seung-jo’s familiar face and a repulsive persona.
His other character, Jang Kang, initially appears naive. He acts as an alibi for the deceased Noh Jin-pyo in exchange for money, seemingly planning to reunite with his family in China. However, his return to Korea in the latter half of the series reveals a sinister plot.
Jang Kang's naive facade crumbles as he begins extorting money from Eun-soo and Hee-soo. His once simple mannerisms are replaced by a sinister chuckle as he corners Hee-soo. While Noh Jin-pyo embodies outright physical brutality, Jang Kang exploits the desperation of the two women for his survival.
The character design is remarkable. Jang Kang's initial reticence and awkwardness serve as a deliberate setup by Jang Seung-jo, concealing the true villainy that is later revealed. The deliberate awkwardness in the first half makes his later transformation all the more chilling when his true nature surfaces.
Jang Seung-jo, previously known for his ‘gentlemanly’ roles, has now embodied two vastly different villains within a single project. Despite sharing the commonality of being ‘evil,’ their hidden intentions and outward appearances distinguish them as separate entities, a testament to Jang Seung-jo’s powerful acting.
‘The Betrayal’ centers on Eun-soo and Hee-soo murdering Noh Jin-pyo, making it crucial to convince the audience of their motives. Jang Seung-jo brilliantly fulfills this challenge by realistically depicting Noh Jin-pyo and Jang Kang as characters who are indeed 'worthy of death,' thus justifying the protagonists' actions.
Korean netizens are praising Jang Seung-jo's transformative performance, with comments like 'Jang Seung-jo's acting is insane' and 'Truly chilling.' Many are expressing admiration for his ability to perfectly embody complex characters oscillating between good and evil, calling him a 'trustworthy actor.'
