Seo Beom-jun Reflects on 'My Merry Wedding' Role: 'Grateful for the 'Pretty Trash' Nickname'

Actor Seo Beom-jun has shared his thoughts after the successful conclusion of the SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'My Merry Wedding.'

In the drama, Seo Beom-jun played the role of (former) Kim Woo-ju, who betrays his long-time girlfriend Yoo Meri (played by Jung So-min) and faces a breakup. In the final episode, he attempted to bring down Kim Woo-ju (played by Choi Woo-shik) after failing to reconcile with Yoo Meri, leading to a lawsuit for defamation and obstruction of business.

Reflecting on the drama's end, Seo Beom-jun expressed his "gratitude" as the most prominent feeling. "It was a period where I received the most criticism in various languages," he shared with a laugh. "Eventually, being called 'fake Woo-ju' or 'counterfeit Woo-ju' instead of 'former' Woo-ju felt rather endearing."

He explained his approach to portraying (former) Kim Woo-ju, a character who evokes anger yet is hard to hate, stating, "I genuinely acted with the feelings of having loved Meri, regretting my actions, and wanting to return to her." He added, "I tried to show the cute and immature side of a younger man, making viewers let out a sigh of exasperation like, 'Oh no, he's doing it again.' Balancing the anger-inducing aspect with an undeniable charm was crucial."

Speaking about his chemistry with co-stars Jung So-min and Choi Woo-shik, he described them as "truly Meri and Kim Woo-ju themselves." He recalled, "From rehearsals, we freely exchanged ideas, creating richer scenes." He highlighted a scene where (current) Kim Woo-ju's actions were not in the original script but were developed during rehearsal, showcasing his dedication to the drama.

Seo Beom-jun concluded by expressing his gratitude for receiving the nickname 'Pretty Trash' for his first 'villain' role. "This experience has fueled my desire to take on more diverse characters," he stated. He vowed to become an actor who inspires anticipation and trust, saying, "I want to be an actor that viewers look forward to, thinking, 'Seo Beom-jun is in this drama. I want to see it.'"
