Play 'Turing Machine' Returns After 3 Years with Star-Studded Cast
The acclaimed play 'Turing Machine,' which brings to life the story of brilliant British mathematician Alan Turing, is set to return to the stage in January, approximately three years after its last run.
Penned by writer and actor Benoît Solès, 'Turing Machine' delves into the complex life of Turing, exploring his journey as a genius, his struggles as a homosexual, and the loneliness he endured. The play unfolds on a unique four-sided stage, offering an intimate perspective.
The production has garnered significant recognition, having won four major awards at the prestigious Molière Awards, including Best Writer, Best Comedy, Best Actor, and Best Play, solidifying its artistic merit and quality.
Alan Turing is celebrated not only as a pioneer of computer science and the originator of the AI concept and the 'Turing Test' but also as a hidden hero of World War II. His crucial work in breaking Germany's 'Enigma' code is credited with shortening the war and saving approximately 14 million lives.
For this revival, the stage design has been reconfigured into a four-sided structure to enhance audience immersion and focus on the characters' inner emotions. Two actors will portray multiple roles, delivering a dense performance that bridges language, emotion, mathematics, and sensibility.
Reprising his role as the titular mathematician is Lee Seung-ju, who led the original production. Joining him are new cast members Lee Sang-yoon and Lee Dong-hwi. Lee Hwi-jong, Choi Jung-woo, and Moon Yoo-gang will portray characters central to the 'Turing's robbery case,' including Michael Ross, Hugh Alexander, and Arnold Murray.
'Turing Machine' is scheduled to run from January 8th to March 1st at the S Theater in Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Seoul.
Netizens are expressing excitement for the return of 'Turing Machine.' Comments include, "Can't wait to see Lee Sang-yoon and Lee Dong-hwi as Turing, I have to go see it!" and "I really enjoyed it the first time, looking forward to this season too." Others are curious, "Turing himself is such an interesting figure, I wonder how the play will portray him."
