The escalating diplomatic tensions between China and Japan, fueled by recent remarks from Japanese politicians regarding potential military intervention in case of a Taiwan emergency, are now spilling over into the entertainment industry, impacting K-pop group aespa.

Amidst the diplomatic fallout, a fan meeting for Japanese boy group JO1 in Guangzhou, China, was abruptly canceled due to 'force majeure.' Simultaneously, in Japan, a petition demanding the removal of aespa from the prestigious year-end NHK music show 'Kohaku Uta Gassen' (The紅白歌合戦) has gained significant traction, targeting Chinese member Ningning.

JO1, an 11-member group formed through the Japanese version of the survival show 'Produce 101 Japan,' is under LAPONE Entertainment, a joint venture between South Korea's CJ ENM and Japan's Yoshimoto Kogyo. The cancellation was announced by Chinese music platform QQ Music.

Meanwhile, Ningning of aespa has come under fire in Japan due to a past social media post featuring an image resembling a mushroom cloud, reminiscent of the atomic bomb. This resurfacing controversy, coupled with the current diplomatic spat, has led to backlash.

A petition on the global platform Change.org calling for aespa's withdrawal from 'Kohaku Uta Gassen' garnered over 50,000 signatures within 24 hours and has since surpassed 70,000.

The petitioner argued, "'Kohaku Uta Gassen' is an event that represents Japan. Allowing behavior that disregards historical consciousness will harm Japan's international image and the victims of the Hiroshima atomic bombing." Many comments echoed this sentiment, stating, "We cannot have a member who posted a picture of lighting resembling a nuclear mushroom cloud with a smile perform on Japan's year-end stage."

Japanese media reports suggest aespa has become a major victim of this diplomatic conflict, and their potential appearance on 'Kohaku Uta Gassen' could serve as an indicator of the tension levels between China and Japan. As the conflict between the two nations shows signs of prolonging, the ripple effects are extending into the cultural and entertainment spheres, raising concerns about the future of cultural exchange between South Korea and Japan.

Korean netizens are divided, with some commenting, 'It's unfair for innocent artists to suffer due to political issues,' and others stating, 'While Ningning's past actions were questionable, this current situation feels like an overreaction capitalizing on political tensions.' There are also concerns about K-pop artists becoming entangled in political disputes.
