Edgar Wright Reveals 'The Running Man' Drone Camera Secrets
Director Edgar Wright has shared fascinating behind-the-scenes details from the filming of his upcoming movie, 'The Running Man'.
In a video released on the YouTube channel ‘Cine21’ on the 20th, Wright discussed the film's production with director Bong Joon-ho, shedding light on a unique concept for the drone cameras featured in the movie.
"We had a rule amongst ourselves. We called the drone cameras in the film 'rovers', and we didn't just see them as cameras. We saw them as creatures that appear just before someone dies, like vultures circling death. Their job is to capture the moment someone dies," Wright explained. He humorously added, "While this concept was cool, it was a headache to film."
He further elaborated, "We constantly had to debate whether a particular shot was from the camera's perspective within the movie or a broadcast feed. On set, we literally mounted cameras on poles and shot, saying, 'This is a broadcast angle.' While I'm satisfied with the result, the shooting process was complex."
Wright expressed particular gratitude for his collaboration with cinematographer Jeong Jeong-hoon. "We had over 165 sets and filming locations, so the workload was immense. The shooting time was also long. What got me through it every time was the cinematographer, who always made us laugh," he said.
He mentioned this was his second time working with Director Jeong, stating, "I feel incredibly lucky. I've worked with brilliant cinematographers. This is my second time working with Director Jeong. What I always feel is that Korean films since the 2000s have a unique neo-noir sensibility, which is truly captivating. Especially the atmosphere of films like 'Memories of Murder'. The director really captured that essence in this film."
'The Running Man' is scheduled to premiere on December 10th.
Korean netizens reacted with comments like, 'It's impressive that Edgar Wright mentioned cinematographer Jeong Jeong-hoon's humor made the shoot enjoyable. Korean staff are the best!', 'Hearing about the drone camera concept makes me even more excited for the movie. I want to see it quickly!', and 'He mentioned 'Memories of Murder', so I'm curious about the film's atmosphere.' Their comments show high anticipation for the upcoming film.
