‘Much More Fun’ Addresses Lee Yi-kyung’s Departure and ‘Noodle Slurping’ Controversy, Apologizes
MBC’s variety show ‘Much More Fun’ (놀면 뭐하니?) has officially responded to controversies surrounding cast member Lee Yi-kyung’s departure and the widely discussed ‘noodle slurping’ incident.
Previously, Lee Yi-kyung took to his personal social media to reveal that the production team had suggested his departure from the show and had requested the ‘noodle slurping’ scene, which became a point of contention. He stated that these actions were part of his exit process.
In response, the ‘Much More Fun’ production team issued a statement on their official social media on the 22nd, apologizing for causing concern. They pledged to address the issues raised by Lee Yi-kyung regarding the show without concealment.
Regarding the ‘noodle slurping’ controversy, the production team admitted their oversight in not protecting the cast member. They acknowledged that Lee Yi-kyung spontaneously performed the action to entertain viewers during filming in Hong Kong and Japan. While initially the reaction seemed positive, they admitted that asking him to do it again for further entertainment was an excessive request.
They further explained that Lee Yi-kyung’s original comment, “We’re doing this for entertainment!” was edited out, leading to misunderstandings and discomfort for both Lee Yi-kyung and the audience. The alternative phrase, “For more fun…” and accompanying subtitles, were intended to convey that the segment was for comedic purposes but ultimately fell short.
Concerning his departure, the team stated that due to the ongoing media speculation surrounding Lee Yi-kyung’s personal life, it became difficult for him to continue participating in a show that requires weekly entertainment. They clarified that the production team initially suggested his departure to his agency and agreed to respect their decision, even if it led to media reports. Subsequently, Lee Yi-kyung’s agency contacted them, opting for a voluntary departure due to scheduling conflicts.
The production team requested that viewers refrain from criticizing or speculating about other cast members, explaining that they had asked them to mention the voluntary departure due to scheduling as a courtesy to Lee Yi-kyung.
Finally, the ‘Much More Fun’ team vowed to be more meticulous and considerate in their production process to ensure that cast members’ efforts for entertainment are not misinterpreted. They reiterated their sincere apologies to Lee Yi-kyung and everyone who felt discomfort.
Korean netizens reacted with mixed feelings, with some stating, “It’s a relief they clarified things honestly,” and others commenting, “Lee Yi-kyung must have had a hard time. The production team should have been more considerate,” while also urging, “Please be more careful with filming in the future to avoid such issues.”
