K-pop duo AKMU (Akdong Musician) is set to part ways with YG Entertainment after a 12-year journey with the label.

As their exclusive contract nears its end in late December, AKMU is reportedly exploring new horizons beyond YG. The agency has revealed that they discussed AKMU's future plans, with the possibility of establishing an independent company or moving to a different agency both being considered.

According to reports, YG's Chief Producer Yang Hyun-suk visited AKMU's home for a dinner about six months ago. During their meal, they reminisced about their journey since winning 'K-pop Star Season 2' 12 years prior. Yang Hyun-suk, after hearing about the duo's considerations, reportedly suggested that venturing out independently might be beneficial and pledged his support from behind the scenes.

The path forward for AKMU appears to be branching into two main directions. One option is to sign with another major or mid-sized entertainment agency. The other is to establish their own independent company, possibly with long-time managers.

Moving to a new agency would allow AKMU to leverage an established system, global distribution networks, and existing infrastructure for marketing, promotion, tours, and international activities. For a duo with AKMU's hit songs and brand power, they would likely be a top priority investment for any new company.

However, AKMU has consistently taken the lead in their music, from songwriting and composing to production and album concepts since their debut. Joining a new company might entail compromises regarding schedules, album release cycles, and creative direction, potentially limiting their artistic freedom.

Conversely, establishing an independent company would provide AKMU with complete creative control. As both artists and CEOs, they could design their album release schedules, project formats, and performance platforms. This could also open doors for expanding their intellectual property (IP) into exhibitions, performances, videos, and publications, or even nurturing junior musicians as a label.

Naturally, an independent venture comes with significant risks, including the full responsibility of company management, including human resources, finance, legal matters, and public relations. The energy required for creative work would need to be divided with operational tasks.

Given these factors, some predict that a hybrid model could be a practical solution. This would involve partnering with a larger entity for distribution, international promotion, and touring, while maintaining independent control over other aspects of their operations.

Netizens expressed support and anticipation, commenting, "I'm excited to see AKMU showcase their unique colors even more!", "It's sad to see them leave YG, but I'm even more excited for what's next", and "I'm rooting for them to succeed with their own company!"
