Son Tae-young Worries Over Son Riho's US College Admissions: 'Seems Harder Than Korea'
Actress Son Tae-young has expressed her anxieties about her eldest son, Riho, facing the US college admissions process.
In a recent video uploaded to her personal YouTube channel, 'Mrs. New Jersey Son Tae-young,' titled 'Son Tae-young's Struggles Ahead of Son's US College Admissions (Why It's Harder Than Korea),' she shared her concerns.
The video features Son Tae-young meeting with a friend at a popular brunch spot in New York to discuss her children. Responding to her friend's sentiment about children growing up too fast, Son Tae-young playfully remarked, "I want them to grow up quickly so I can send them off."
She then revealed her nervousness, stating, "There's only one year left until graduation." Explaining the US early admission process, which is similar to Korea's rolling admissions, she said, "Early decisions are announced in December. If they get accepted, it's a Happy Christmas; if not, it's a bit of a Sad Christmas. Even if you don't get in early, it's not entirely sad because there's still regular decision. It's about whether you experience the joy of acceptance sooner or have to wait until next year." She added, "Riho will probably do well on his own."
However, Son Tae-young also lamented, "Getting into a US university isn't just about good grades. You need to write good essays, build a strong portfolio, and physical activity is a given. The US admissions process is unpredictable. It seems harder than in Korea." She chuckled, adding, "When we meet, we only talk about our kids."
Son Tae-young, who is married to actor Kwon Sang-woo and has one son and one daughter, is currently residing in New York for her children's education.
Korean netizens reacted with empathy, commenting, "A mother's heart is all the same," "Riho is smart, he'll do great!", and "US college admissions are really complicated."
