Remembering Goo Hara: 6th Anniversary of Her Passing Sparks Renewed Attention for 'Goo Hara Act'
It has been six years since the beloved artist Goo Hara, a former member of the group KARA, left us.
Goo Hara tragically passed away on November 24, 2019, at the age of 28. Discovered in her home in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul, her sudden departure left a profound sense of grief among fans and the public.
Debuting in 2008 with KARA's first mini-album, Goo Hara was instrumental in the group's phenomenal success with hit songs like 'Pretty Girl,' 'Mister,' 'Jumping,' and 'Lupin.' As KARA garnered immense popularity in Japan, contributing significantly to the Hallyu wave, Goo Hara shone as the group's center, captivating audiences with her doll-like visuals.
Despite facing personal hardships, including a legal battle with her former partner during her solo career, Goo Hara has been posthumously recognized as the inspiration behind the 'Goo Hara Act.'
This amendment to the Civil Act aims to strip inheritance rights from individuals who have failed in their parental duties or committed serious criminal offenses. The movement was spearheaded by Goo Hara's older brother, Goo Ho-in, who initiated legal action against their mother for seeking inheritance despite abandoning them.
After facing legislative hurdles, the 'Goo Hara Act' finally passed the National Assembly in its 22nd session and is set to be implemented in January 2026.
In a touching tribute, KARA members reunited for a comeback with their song 'When I Move' in 2022, sharing a message that "Hara is still with us," which resonated deeply with fans.
Korean netizens expressed their sorrow, with comments like, "It's hard to believe it's been 6 years, Hara," "Rest in peace in heaven," and "It's somewhat hopeful that the Goo Hara Act was passed."
