Actor Sohn Bo-seung's Egg Brand Sales Site Shuts Down Amid Military Service Controversy
Sohn Bo-seung, son of comedian Lee Kyung-sil and an actor himself, is facing allegations of engaging in commercial activities while serving in the military. Amidst the controversy, the sales website for his egg brand, 'Wooaran,' which was operated under his name, has reportedly been shut down.
According to a media report on the 3rd, the online shopping mall 'Prestige,' operated under Sohn Bo-seung's name, was officially closed on August 26th. This mall served as the official sales platform for Lee Kyung-sil's egg brand, 'Wooaran.'
Previously, 'Wooaran' came under fire when it was pointed out that eggs with the shell code '4' (indicating conventional cage farming) were being sold at a higher price than those with code '1' (indicating free-range, animal welfare certified eggs). The shell code on eggs signifies the farming environment.
In response, Lee Kyung-sil addressed the issue directly on social media, stating, "From a consumer's perspective, it was important to know what to look for when choosing food. I sincerely apologize for not fully considering consumers' feelings out of pride in producing high-quality eggs."
She further explained, "While it is true that 30 eggs with code '4' for 15,000 won is generally expensive, 'Wooaran's' quality is superior to any other eggs sold on the market, and we have strived and researched to provide value commensurate with the price, ensuring consistent quality."
The controversy escalated when it was revealed that Sohn Bo-seung was listed as the representative for the sales site, leading to suspicions of illegal commercial activity during his military service. Sohn Bo-seung enlisted as a full-time reserve soldier in June.
The Military Service Basic Act stipulates that soldiers engaging in commercial activities without the minister's approval are subject to disciplinary action or punishment. Lee Kyung-sil's side had previously stated, "It has been an ongoing investment phase, so no profits have been realized yet."
Korean netizens expressed their surprise and disapproval, commenting, "Engaging in commercial activities while in the military? It's hard to understand from a common sense perspective," and "Isn't it too much for him to be the representative when selling under his mother's name?" Some also suggested, "They should really manage their image better."
