Cinecube Celebrates 25 Years: 'Chronicles of the Cinema' Directors and Actors Shine at Anniversary Event
Cinecube, recognized as South Korea's longest-standing art-house cinema, has marked its 25th anniversary.
A celebratory ceremony was held on the 2nd at Cinecube, graced by the presence of the main cast and crew of the special commemorative film, 'Chronicles of the Cinema'.
This anthology film, directed by Lee Jong-pil, Yoon Ga-eun, and Jang Kun-jae, revisits the artistic and societal significance of movie theaters through three distinct short stories.
Attendees included director Lee Jong-pil, actors Kim Dae-myung, Lee Soo-kyung, and Hong Sa-bin for 'Chimpanzee'; director Yoon Ga-eun and actor Ko A-sung for 'Naturally'; and director Jang Kun-jae, along with actors Kim Yeon-gyo and Moon Sang-hoon for 'A Time for Film'.
Director Jang Kun-jae expressed his congratulations, stating, "It's a pleasure that Cinecube is here in Gwanghwamun. Happy 25th anniversary."
Director Yoon Ga-eun shared her sentiment: "I encountered many life-changing films here. I hope this theater continues to screen movies that alter people's lives for the next 25, even 100 years."
Director Lee Jong-pil emphasized the theater's value, noting, "I recall there being more art-house cinemas near Gwanghwamun, but now Cinecube is the only one remaining, making it an even more precious space."
Uhm Jae-yong, CEO of Tcast, Cinecube's operating company, reminisced, "Cinecube opened its doors in this very spot in 2000, fulfilling the vision of former chairman Lee Ho-jin of Taekwang Group to create a space where citizens could comfortably enjoy culture and arts, even in the city center."
He added, "Over the past 25 years, Cinecube has grown into a representative art-house cinema in Korea, witnessing the trajectory of Korean independent and art films. It has been a place where many young individuals nurtured their dreams of becoming filmmakers and where a heartwarming film provided great comfort to citizens."
This year, Cinecube celebrated its milestone with various events, including a special retrospective featuring director Hirokazu Kore-eda, who has drawn the largest audience since the theater's opening, and by showcasing 'Chronicles of the Cinema' at film festivals.
CEO Uhm concluded, "Cinecube's ability to remain in this location for 25 years is thanks to the film industry professionals, actors, the audience who have consistently shown their love, and our dedicated staff. We promise to continue bringing you excellent films and rich programming as an art-house cinema in the heart of Gwanghwamun. We sincerely hope to share the next 25 years with you, just as we have the past 25."
Netizens commented, "It's hard to believe it's already been 25 years, it brings back memories!" and "Please continue to show us great films! Cinecube is truly a treasure, we'll keep cheering you on!"
