Billboard Korea Launches New Charts: 'Global K-Songs' and 'Hot 100' to Showcase K-Music's Reach
Billboard Korea has unveiled two new charts designed to meticulously track the flow and global influence of K-Music.
On the 3rd, Billboard Korea announced the official launch of ‘Billboard Korea Global K-Songs’ and ‘Billboard Korea Hot 100’. This marks the first time Billboard will officially tally how K-Music is consumed in the global music market. The new charts are part of Billboard's K-Music project in Korea, developed through close collaboration between the US Billboard headquarters and Billboard Korea.
The ‘Billboard Korea Global K-Songs’ chart will serve as a global ranking, reflecting the popularity of K-Music worldwide. It will be based on actual streaming and purchase data from across the globe, including Korea, offering a clear view of K-Music's international dissemination.
Meanwhile, the ‘Billboard Korea Hot 100’ will focus on the domestic Korean market, highlighting the most beloved songs within the country, regardless of language. Both charts will utilize official data, including streaming usage and digital sales from major global and domestic music platforms, aiming to provide objective and reliable metrics for fans and the industry alike.
These new charts are expected to expand Billboard's established global charting system, which includes the US ‘Billboard Hot 100’ and ‘Billboard 200’, by comprehensively reflecting the growth and influence of K-Music internationally. They are also anticipated to serve as a 'common language' for global K-Music fans and domestic listeners to compare and understand the reception of Korean music worldwide and within Korea.
Silvio Pietroluongo, Executive Vice President of Chart & Data Partnership at Billboard, expressed his pleasure, stating, "We are very pleased to reintroduce the new ‘Billboard Korea Hot 100’ to provide Korean music fans with a more comprehensive view of a wider range of songs and artists." He added, "The global influence of Korean music has already been widely proven, and the newly released ‘Billboard Korea Global K-Songs’ chart will officially showcase the top-performing K-Music songs globally each week." Billboard and Billboard Korea plan to further develop various projects centered around K-Music based on these charts. The rankings will be updated weekly and available on the Billboard Korea and US Billboard websites.
Netizens in Korea are expressing excitement, with comments like 'Finally, charts that properly measure K-pop!', 'My national pride is soaring!', and 'It's great to see overseas reactions and domestic popularity together.' Many are looking forward to how the charts will reflect the global impact of Korean music.
