Song Hye-kyo Becomes 60,000th Member of KOMCA, Receives Creation Support Fund
The Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), led by Chairman Choo Ga-yeol, has surpassed the milestone of 60,000 members.
To commemorate this achievement, KOMCA presented a creation support fund to actress Song Hye-kyo, its 60,000th registered member, on the 2nd, marking a new chapter in protecting the rights of music creators.
Founded in 1964, KOMCA is celebrating its 61st anniversary this year. The organization previously surpassed 40,000 members in April 2021 and 50,000 in September 2023. The addition of the 60,000th member around November 2025 is attributed to the rapid growth of the digital music industry and the global expansion of K-pop, leading to increased interest in copyright registration and creator rights protection.
During a ceremony held at KOMCA's headquarters in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, on the 2nd, Chairman Choo Ga-yeol personally handed over 1 million KRW in creation support funds to Song Hye-kyo. "I am delighted to become a member of KOMCA, which has consistently strived for the rights of music creators," Song Hye-kyo stated. "I will do my best to deliver moving experiences to people through good music."
Chairman Choo Ga-yeol remarked, "The fact that Korean music has become a global cultural force is due to the sweat and passion of countless musicians who have dedicated themselves to creation, from their early days to the present. The number 60,000 represents not just a membership count, but 60,000 voices that bring emotion and comfort to our society." He added, "KOMCA will do its utmost to improve the collection system, ensure transparent distribution, and expand welfare programs so that all members can create in a more stable environment."
Last year, KOMCA collected a record-breaking 436.5 billion KRW in royalties, distributing over 400 billion KRW for the first time in its history. The total number of domestic and international works under KOMCA's management has reached approximately 8.4 million, demonstrating the continuous expansion of its management scale and international copyright management capabilities.
Building on these achievements, KOMCA plans to strengthen creator rights protection policies in line with changes in the digital environment and continue its efforts to foster a fair and transparent copyright ecosystem.
Korean netizens reacted enthusiastically to Song Hye-kyo joining KOMCA, with comments like "Wow, I didn't know Song Hye-kyo was a KOMCA member!" and "I hope support for creators expands even further." Some netizens noted, "Even though Song Hye-kyo isn't a musician herself, it's good to see her participate in protecting creators' rights."
