Actress Song Hye-kyo Becomes 60,000th Member of Korea Music Copyright Association, Receives Creator Support Fund
The Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) has officially welcomed its 60,000th member, actress Song Hye-kyo.
A ceremony was held on November 2nd to commemorate this milestone, during which KOMCA Chairman Choo Ga-yeol presented Song Hye-kyo with a 1 million KRW creator support fund. Founded in 1964, KOMCA is celebrating its 61st anniversary and has seen remarkable growth, surpassing 40,000 members in April 2021 and 50,000 in September 2023.
This rapid expansion is attributed to the booming digital music industry and the global surge in K-pop's popularity, leading to increased interest in protecting creators' rights and copyright registration.
At the ceremony, Song Hye-kyo expressed her delight in joining the association, stating, "I am happy to become a member of KOMCA, which has consistently strived for the rights of music creators. I will do my best to deliver inspiration to people through good music."
Chairman Choo Ga-yeol remarked, "The number 60,000 represents not just a membership count, but 60,000 voices that bring comfort and inspiration to our society. KOMCA is committed to improving our collection systems, ensuring transparent distribution, and expanding welfare programs so that all our members can create in a stable environment."
Last year, KOMCA achieved a record by collecting and distributing over 436.5 billion KRW in royalties. The association currently manages approximately 8.4 million domestic and international works, showcasing its growing scale and international copyright management capabilities.
Korean netizens reacted positively, with comments like 'It's surprising that actress Song Hye-kyo is a member of the music copyright association,' 'Please continue to work hard for the protection of creators' rights,' and 'This news shows how high K-pop's status has risen.'
