Park Hae-soo Reflects on 'Netflix Public Servant' Nickname, Expresses Deep Affection for 'The Great Flood'
Actor Park Hae-soo, who stars in the upcoming Netflix film 'The Great Flood,' has opened up about being affectionately called the 'Netflix Public Servant.'
The production presentation for the new Netflix movie 'The Great Flood' was held on the morning of the 16th at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul. Director Kim Byung-woo, along with lead actors Kim Da-mi and Park Hae-soo, and Kwon Eun-sung, attended the event hosted by MC Park Kyung-lim to discuss the film.
'The Great Flood' is an SF disaster blockbuster that depicts the desperate struggle for survival in a submerged apartment building on the last day of Earth, after a massive flood. Park Hae-soo plays Hee-jo of the Security Team, expected to significantly enhance the film's immersion.
Park Hae-soo shared his excitement, stating, "I'm really looking forward to it. Honestly, this is a project I've poured more affection into than any other. Even though we filmed it three years ago, recalling that time for this press conference brought back vivid and enjoyable memories. I was highly anticipating and curious about it from the moment I first received the script. When I saw the final product, I felt it was crafted with meticulous care. I believe it will be well-received because it successfully captures the characteristics of a Korean-style genre, particularly within the rare SF category."
He further elaborated, "When I first read the script, it wasn't a typically easy read. The format was unusual, with just numbers indicating scene transitions, almost like a cipher. However, as I continued reading, a sense of lingering emotion emerged, driven by curiosity about its feasibility of execution. That's why I chose this project, intrigued like in the director's previous works, to see how human nature and inner selves are revealed and change within a confined space. I was also curious about how Da-mi's character would evolve."
Park Hae-soo, who has appeared in numerous Netflix productions earning him the 'Netflix Public Servant' moniker—with four projects this year alone, including 'The Accidental Narco' and 'The Silent Sea'—singled out 'The Great Flood' as his most cherished work. He humbly remarked, "Sometimes I think about it. Many friends can rely on me, but being called 'Public Servant' makes me feel a sense of responsibility, and sometimes embarrassment. I am striving to meet you all with good projects."
Nevertheless, Park Hae-soo added, "While I cherish all my works, I felt a strong sense of challenge with this project. I hadn't encountered a disaster film like this before, one that doesn't feature a large cast but instead follows just two or three characters. I was very curious about it, which fueled my drive."
'The Great Flood' is set to be released on Netflix on the 19th.
Korean netizens reacted positively to Park Hae-soo's humble yet passionate remarks about 'The Great Flood,' commenting, "He truly embodies the 'Public Servant' spirit of Netflix," and "An actor I can trust." Many expressed anticipation for the film, with comments like, "Can't wait to watch it!" and "So excited to see Park Hae-soo's acting."
