Angelina Jolie Reveals Mastectomy Scars on Time France Cover: 'Sharing These Scars with Many Women I Love'
Hollywood icon Angelina Jolie is making a powerful statement by revealing her mastectomy scars on the cover of the inaugural issue of Time France.
In an accompanying interview with the magazine, Jolie candidly discusses her family history with cancer, her children, her life as an Oscar-winning actress, and her extensive humanitarian work.
Jolie underwent a preventative double mastectomy in 2013. A decade later, she shared her scars, stating, "I share these scars with many women I love. And every time I see them, I think of my mother and other women who suffered from cancer. Every time I see it, I think of my mother and other women who suffered from cancer. I wanted to be with them because I knew Time France would spread knowledge about breast health, prevention, and breast cancer."
Her mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, passed away from breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 56. After discovering she carried the BRCA1 gene, which significantly increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancers, Jolie made the difficult decision to undergo the surgery.
At the time, Jolie wrote an op-ed for The New York Times titled 'My Medical Choice,' explaining her decision. "The decision to have a mastectomy was not an easy one, but it is one I am very happy to have made," she wrote. "My breast cancer risk has been reduced from 87% to less than 5%. I can now tell my children that they don't have to fear losing me to breast cancer."
In 2015, she further revealed that she had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as a preventative measure against ovarian cancer.
Jolie emphasized the importance of informed choices, saying, "All women should be able to make informed choices about their own healthcare journeys. Genetic testing and screenings should be accessible and affordable for women with clear risk factors or significant family histories."
She added, "Sharing my experience in 2013 was intended to encourage informed choices. Medical decisions should be personal, and women should receive the information and support needed to make those choices. Access to screening and treatment should not be dictated by economic status or where we live."
Netizens worldwide are praising Angelina Jolie's courage and vulnerability. Comments flooded social media, with users saying, "Her openness is inspiring and empowers so many women," "A true icon, using her platform for good," and "Thank you for sharing your journey, it truly matters."
