Choi Soo-young Opens Up About Hollywood Struggles: 'Cried Over Loneliness and Cultural Differences'
Actress Choi Soo-young has shared candid details about her experiences while pursuing opportunities in Hollywood, revealing moments of loneliness and tears shed due to differences in acting styles.
Appearing on the YouTube channel ‘TEO’’s web show ‘Salon de Teo 2’ on the 16th, alongside co-star Kim Jae-young for their drama ‘Idol: The Coup’, Choi Soo-young discussed her recent three-week solo stay in the United States for action training.
She recounted a specific incident while learning how to act being shot by a local stunt team. "When I acted out getting shot and falling, the stunt team said, ‘You look like a K-drama female lead right now,’" she shared. Choi Soo-young explained the contrast: Korean dramas often feature dramatic, emotional portrayals of being shot, whereas Hollywood action sequences prioritize a more detached, rhythmic style of falling.
"They didn't intend to disrespect me, but being alone in a foreign place, their words felt like they were looking down on me," she confessed. "Feeling overwhelmed with sadness, I even teared up, saying, ‘I am adapting too,’" she revealed, evoking sympathy from the audience.
Choi Soo-young further elaborated on the isolation, sharing another instance: "I was buying water at the supermarket alone, and when I couldn't find my keys, I panicked, and the frustration and loneliness just overwhelmed me, and I cried." She openly spoke about the profound loneliness she experienced while navigating life without her manager by her side.
Fans expressed support for Choi Soo-young's courage and honesty. Comments included, "Choi Soo-young is amazing for doing so well despite the challenges!", and "You must have gone through a lot of hardship alone in a foreign country. Cheering for your next project!"
