‘Office Worker’s’ Director Kim Min, “Focusing on Realism… Actors’ Chemistry is the Fun”
The Coupang Play variety show 'Office Worker’s' Season 2 is gaining attention for its directorial approach, which is closer to an experimental play than a typical comedy. Director Kim Min revealed that he focuses on capturing the awkward and uncomfortable moments of real office life, rather than exaggerated humor.
Director Kim described himself as someone who “sets the stage and waits,” providing actors with a free environment instead of a script to encourage improvisation. He emphasized, “Even if it’s not funny, viewers should be able to relate and say ‘that’s my story,’” prioritizing the depiction of realistic moments over pure entertainment value.
The program sets simple themes like ‘company card’ or ‘leaving work,’ with the remaining 90% filled with actors’ ad-libs. Director Kim likened this to a jazz ensemble, explaining that the unpredictable improvisations of the actors are the vitality of the show. Shin Dong-yup, as the CEO of DY Planning, played a crucial role in fostering an atmosphere where the cast could act freely.
Director Kim particularly expressed gratitude towards actress Hyeri. He mentioned that during the first filming, Hyeri’s witty response to Kim Won-hoon’s ad-lib expanded it into a skit, revitalizing the atmosphere on set and enabling the show to continue to Season 2. He also added that during the filming of ‘Shindorim Amateur Football Club,’ he met Son Heung-min, who appeared as a client this season, showcasing his world-class presence.
When asked about Season 3, Director Kim expressed his hope for its production, hinting that there are still many stories to tell, such as the unexpected twists of character Baek Bujang, raising anticipation. khd9987@sportsseoul.com
