Lee Hanee Faces Backlash Over Tax Evasion Allegations and Unregistered Agency Operations
Actress Lee Hanee is currently embroiled in a series of controversies, casting a shadow over her joy as a mother of two. Allegations of tax evasion and the illegal operation of her agency have surfaced, dividing public opinion among her fans.
Previously, a complaint was filed with the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul, alleging embezzlement, breach of trust, and tax evasion through a corporation established by Lee Hanee in 2015. The accuser claimed that Lee Hanee acquired real estate worth 6.5 billion won within two years of establishing the company with a capital of 10 million won and was subsequently charged 6 billion won in taxes.
Lee Hanee's agency, Team Huf, quickly issued a statement. They explained that Lee Hanee cooperated fully with an unscheduled tax audit by the Seoul Regional National Tax Service. While additional taxes were incurred due to differences in interpretation with the tax authorities, they asserted that there was no intentional evasion and that the full amount has already been paid.
During a recent interview for the new Netflix series 'The Fire of 'Aema', Lee Hanee shared her feelings for the first time regarding the tax evasion allegations. She expressed a sense of injustice, stating, "There are always unfair things in life. Tax issues can also be a matter of differing perspectives." She added, "Although the taxes have been paid, legal proceedings to determine validity are ongoing with higher authorities. I am trying to accept it with equanimity as it is still in process." She also calmly mentioned that tax investigations have been ongoing for four years since her first pregnancy and childbirth.
However, the controversy did not subside easily. While celebratory sentiments were high following the birth of her second daughter last month, a new issue emerged just a month later. It was revealed that Huf Project, where Lee Hanee serves as CEO, had been operating without registration as a cultural and artistic planning business, a violation of current laws that could lead to imprisonment or fines.
In response, Lee Hanee's side stated, "We were not fully aware of the registration obligation." They added, "We plan to complete the registration process promptly after consulting with experts." Despite the explanations, public sentiment has turned cold due to the successive controversies.
Lee Hanee debuted in the 2006 film 'Yeon Talking' and has consistently pursued her acting career since then. She gained significant popularity with the dramas 'The Fiery Priest' and 'One the Woman' in 2021, earning recognition for both her acting prowess and box-office appeal. Currently, as a mother of two, she balances childcare with her professional activities, receiving support from many.
