Director Lee Ho-hyun Defines MBN's 'The First Lady' as a "Melodrama"

Director Lee Ho-hyun of the new MBN drama 'The First Lady' has sparked interest by describing the series as a "melodrama."

At a press conference held on the afternoon of the 24th at The Link Seoul in Guro-gu, Seoul, Director Lee responded to questions about the drama's genre by stating, "When I first received the script, it was so engaging that I wondered what genre it was. I worried if I, who knows little about politics, could handle a political drama. But the writer told me, 'Director, this is a melodrama.' At that moment, I felt confident that I could work on it enjoyably."

Director Lee added that 'The First Lady' goes beyond a simple marital conflict, promising that the various emotions and stories experienced by the main characters within their respective professions and situations will unfold intriguingly. He explained, "I focused on the emotions and situations of the two main characters, and due to their professions as the president-elect and his wife, interesting stories are intertwined. I believe viewers will encounter a diverse range of characters."

However, actress Eugene, who plays Cha Soo-yeon, the future First Lady, offered a different interpretation. Eugene stated with a laugh, "I didn't film it thinking it was a melodrama. While it can be seen as a melodrama because it's a story about a couple, Cha Soo-yeon is a woman who charges towards her great ambitions. I filmed it like a warrior."

Eugene shared, "Acting wasn't easy, but it was fun because it's a character I'm playing for the first time. I filmed it enjoyably while struggling on my own. She's a character who moves forward relentlessly towards her dreams, and might seem cold and scary at times," she introduced her character.

Meanwhile, MBN's new drama 'The First Lady' will premiere tonight, the 24th, at 10:20 PM.

Director Lee Ho-hyun aimed to explore human emotions and relationships deeply within 'The First Lady,' even though it presents itself as a political drama. He emphasized focusing on delicately portraying the complex psychology of the characters through close collaboration with the actors. This project is expected to further expand his directorial style.
