Veteran Comedian Jeon Yu-seong in Critical Condition; Doctors Say 'This Week is Crucial'

Concerns are mounting as news breaks that veteran comedian Jeon Yu-seong is in critical condition.

Sources report that Jeon is currently hospitalized at a general hospital in Jeonju, with medical staff indicating that 'this week is a crucial period' for his health.

According to recent reports, Jeon's health has deteriorated significantly due to complications from COVID-19 sequelae and pneumothorax, having overcome several life-threatening moments. A fellow comedian who visited him anonymously shared, 'The hospital has advised us to prepare for the worst, making it clear how critical the situation is.' The source also added, 'He is conscious intermittently and is said to have left a will to his only immediate family member, his daughter, when he was lucid.'

An official from the Korea Broadcast Comedians Association stated, 'He struggled with long-term aftereffects of COVID-19, and his health rapidly declined this year, leading to repeated hospitalizations and critical junctures.' In response to requests from junior comedians, the association has initiated an emergency campaign asking for short video messages for Jeon, to be compiled and sent as 'Messages of Love for Our Senior'.

Jeon debuted as a TBC scriptwriter in 1969 before transitioning to comedy, gaining widespread popularity through shows like 'Humor No. 1' and 'Show Video Jockey'. He played a pivotal role in popularizing the term 'comedian' and establishing comedy as a distinct cultural art form. Furthermore, he spearheaded the launch and establishment of 'Gag Concert', marking a generational shift in Korean open comedy. Despite his condition, he has reportedly been relying on an oxygen mask due to breathing difficulties.

Jeon Yu-seong began his career as a TBC scriptwriter in 1969 before transitioning to a career in comedy, where he achieved significant fame. He was instrumental in popularizing the term 'comedian' and elevating comedy as a recognized art genre. He also led the establishment of 'Gag Concert', ushering in a new era for Korean stand-up comedy.
