Comedian Kim Hak-rae Shares Grave Update on Veteran Comedian Jeon Yu-seong: 'Preparing for Funeral as He's Nearing His End'
Comedian Kim Hak-rae has revealed the critical health condition of veteran comedian Jeon Yu-seong, often referred to as the 'godfather of comedy'.
In a phone interview with OSEN on the 25th, Kim Hak-rae stated, "His condition is severe. Doctors' predictions have already been wrong. He should have passed away 4 to 5 days ago, but he is still holding on."
Kim Hak-rae, who visited Jeon Yu-seong in the hospital, described the scene: "He is breathing with the help of a respirator, and even that seems difficult. However, remarkably, his mind is clear. He's capable of improvising and making jokes to visitors, showing he's quite lucid."
Given the circumstances, preparations for a funeral are already underway. "As it seems he might pass any day now, we are preparing for a funeral ceremony for comedians," Kim Hak-rae explained. "Even these arrangements were directed by Jeon Yu-seong himself from his hospital bed."
He also shared details about the funeral wishes. "His daughter mentioned that he wishes to be cremated and his ashes placed in a columbarium at the foot of Jirisan Mountain, followed by a tree burial, which is his preference," Kim Hak-rae said. "Since a legal tree burial is currently difficult, we plan to keep him at the municipal columbarium for now and will move him to a tree burial site as soon as one becomes available." Kim Hak-rae expressed his sorrow, stating, "It breaks my heart."
While a source close to Jeon Yu-seong had previously told OSEN that the situation was not as dire, Kim Hak-rae refuted this. "No, that's not true. Everyone who has seen him directly is extremely concerned and feels the situation is dire, believing he could pass away very soon."
Kim Hak-rae added that Jeon Yu-seong is mentally prepared and has told those around him, "I am going to die soon."
Regarding reports of Jeon Yu-seong leaving last wishes for his daughter, Kim Hak-rae commented, "I haven't asked about that specifically, but I imagine his wishes would be to have a funeral service for comedians and a tree burial after cremation."
Jeon Yu-seong, born in 1949 and now 75 years old, recently underwent a procedure for pneumothorax but has continued to experience breathing difficulties, leading to his hospitalization. He was unable to attend the 'Comedy Book Concert' at the Busan International Comedy Festival last month due to health issues, fueling concerns about his condition.
Jeon Yu-seong debuted as a comedian in the 1970s and gained widespread popularity for his unique comedic style. His catchphrase 'Bap jwo' (Give me food) became a household expression. Beyond his on-stage career, he has also worked as a broadcast writer and film director, showcasing his diverse talents. He has also played a significant role in nurturing younger comedic talent, leaving a lasting legacy in the Korean comedy scene.
