
Comedy Legend Jeon Yu-seong Passes Away at 76, Leaves Behind Laughter and Legacy
Jeon Yu-seong, a towering figure in the Korean comedy scene, has passed away at the age of 76. Known for his unique wit and resilient spirit, he continued to bring laughter to juniors even while battling illness, accepting his final moments with remarkable composure.
The funeral hall was established at Seoul Asan Medical Center on the 26th, with numerous junior comedians and colleagues attending to pay their respects. His daughter and granddaughter were listed as chief mourners. The comedian passed away on the 25th due to worsening symptoms of pneumothorax.
Kim Young-chul, who was particularly close to the deceased, shared the sad news on a live radio broadcast, unable to hold back tears. He recalled, "He was someone who bought me three books." Kim added, "I visited him last year, and many thoughts come to mind. I hope he rests peacefully in a better place," his voice trembling.
The Busan International Comedy Festival also expressed its deep condolences, stating, "He coined the term 'comedian' himself and was a pioneer who opened new horizons in Korean comedy. His footprints, delivering comfort and hope through laughter, will remain forever in the history of Korean comedy."
Kim Hak-rae, president of the Korea Comedians Association, who visited Jeon in the hospital, shared his sorrow. "Even while on oxygen, his mind was sharp, and we exchanged ad-libs in the hospital room," he recalled, his eyes welling up. "We even talked about him saying, 'I'll go ahead, so let's meet again soon.'"
Notably, Jeon Yu-seong himself made arrangements for his funeral, requesting it be a "Comedians' Funeral." Even in his critical condition, his final act of leaving laughter for his juniors has deeply touched many.
Netizens have also joined the wave of mourning, commenting, "He was a wonderful senior until the very end," and "As much as he gave us laughter, we hope he rests peacefully now." The void left by Jeon Yu-seong, who loved the stage and cherished his juniors, is immense, but the laughter and teachings he left behind will forever shine in the annals of Korean comedy.
Jeon Yu-seong debuted in the 1970s and was a legendary comedian who led numerous hit comedy shows. He personally coined and popularized the term 'gagman' (comedian) in Korea, leaving a significant mark on the industry. He was also dedicated to nurturing younger talent, playing a crucial role in the development of Korean comedy.
