'Dae Jang Geum' Star Hong Ri-na Returns to the Spotlight After Two Decades, Hints at Acting Comeback
Actress Hong Ri-na, best known for her role as Choi Geum-young in the hit drama 'Dae Jang Geum' (Jewel in the Palace), has shared an update on her life after nearly two decades away from the entertainment industry.
Last March, Hong Ri-na made a surprise cameo appearance on TV Chosun's 'Song Seung-hwan's Invitation' via a phone call, connecting with her old friend actress Chae Si-ra.
During the call, Hong Ri-na revealed that she had been living in the United States for about 18 to 19 years after getting married, dedicating her time to raising her children. She explained that she hadn't intentionally quit acting but that time simply flew by while she was focused on her family.
However, Hong Ri-na also sparked excitement among fans by suggesting a potential return to acting, humorously stating, "You never know what life will bring. Who knows, maybe I'll play a villain who steals Chae Si-ra's husband someday?"
Debuting in 1987, Hong Ri-na gained international recognition for her portrayal of the cold and dignified Choi Geum-young in 'Dae Jang Geum.' She previously showed remarkable resilience by returning to the stage after a severe fall during the filming of the drama 'San' in 1997. However, she paused her acting career after marrying a Korean-American businessman in 2006 and settling in the U.S.
Netizens expressed their delight upon hearing from Hong Ri-na after such a long absence, with comments like 'It's been so long, Choi Geum-young!', 'Makes me want to rewatch Dae Jang Geum,' and 'Glad to see you're doing well in America.'
