aespa's Karina Opens Up About Infamous 'SM Training Photo': 'Felt Intimidated by Seniors'

Karina, a member of the girl group aespa, has shed light on the much-talked-about 'SM training photo,' explaining her feelings at the time.

Appearing on the YouTube show 'Babsahyo 2' on the 10th, Karina met with Girls' Generation member Hyoyeon, a senior artist from SM Entertainment and someone Karina has long admired. Karina admitted to feeling nervous in front of Hyoyeon, confessing, "It felt like I was at a fan signing event."

Karina and Hyoyeon previously collaborated in the project group Girls On Top. Reflecting on the experience of forming a unit with esteemed seniors like BoA, Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Seulgi, and Wendy, just two years into her debut, Karina shared, "I felt really intimidated and like I was hitting my limits."

She revealed that she grew by repeatedly watching practice videos with the senior artists. In particular, a photo showing Karina and Winter sitting on the floor while other members relaxed on a sofa became known as the 'SM training photo,' sparking much discussion among fans.

Hyoyeon humorously commented, "We got a lot of flak for that photo, with people saying we were being strict," to which Karina replied, "I didn't want to just sit casually in front of my role models. I don't usually sit down much even with my own members," adding to the laughter.

Born in 2000, Karina debuted as a member of aespa in 2020, quickly gaining attention for her striking visuals and performance skills.

During her time with Girls On Top, she felt the pressure of performing alongside artists who had debuted over 15 years prior, dedicating herself to constant practice and growth.
