Super Junior's Siwon Addresses Controversy Over Charlie Kirk Tribute Post

Choi Siwon, a member of the K-pop group Super Junior, has directly addressed the recent controversy surrounding his social media post mourning the passing of American conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

In a lengthy message shared with fans on the official fan community platform 'Bubble' on the 12th, Siwon sought to clarify his intentions. He explained that his tribute was motivated by the tragic nature of Kirk's death, emphasizing his identity as a Christian and a family man, and stating that the loss of life through a shooting during a lecture was a heartbreaking tragedy irrespective of political views.

Siwon expressed his regret that his message was being interpreted differently by the media and the public than he intended. He mentioned that he initially removed the post believing his sentiment had been conveyed, but felt compelled to explain further due to the continued public interest.

Previously, Siwon had posted "REST IN PEACE CHARLIE KIRK" along with a photo of Kirk on his SNS shortly after the news of his death by shooting. This move drew criticism from fans both domestically and internationally, given Kirk's profile as a far-right political commentator, a close associate of former President Donald Trump, and his controversial past statements regarding gun control.

Despite Siwon deleting the post amidst the growing backlash, fan disappointment persisted, leading some to call for his departure from the group. In response, Siwon shared an additional statement encouraging prayers for those criticizing him, highlighting his Christian faith.

Super Junior is currently in the midst of their 20th-anniversary tour, 'SUPER SHOW 10'.
